Project: Hornell CSD Interactive Classroom Addition
General Contractor: Holdsworth-Klimowski Construction
Architect: Hunt – Engineers Architects Surveyors
HKC chose Alpha Iron Works to fabricate and install the stair and railings for the Hornell Central School District Interactive Classroom Addition. The stairs consist of tube steel stringers with terrazzo treads and landings. The railings were constructed with a unique combination of materials: aluminum base shoes supporting glass guardrail panels capped with an extruded aluminum top rail. The pipe handrails are painted steel attached to the glass guardrails with machined stainless steel brackets.
Challenges included the careful handling required to avoid damaging the clean mill finish aluminum components during fabrication and installation. The specified stock handrail brackets also required modification to allow adequate finger clearance at the large tube steel post locations. We used our experience to overcome these challenges while maintaining the architect’s aesthetic vision.
